Democratic or Authoritative Parenting Style Democratic or authoritative parents strive for a balance between adhering to clear standards and respecting individuality among family members. Their child is seen as an equal, integrated part of the family and is given lots of practice and guidance in making choices. Explanations rather than punishments are offered as a way to correct mistakes and develop capacities. While the parents have good intentions, they sometimes feel confused as to how to react to displeasing behavior so that children remain encouraged and confident while learning how to accept responsibility for their actions. Parents may continually ‘second guess’ themselves or wait for negative behavior to escalate and then ‘explode’. They can feel discouraged or confused, wondering if they are responding the ‘right way.’ |
